Hi Lapierre,

I am having similar problems. When installing some lamps I have discovered that the wires for the lights and for the wall outlets are connected via a cheep splitter to the same main wires...

I've asked an electrician to bring a new line in my room. He brought one form the main conduit in the building. Although he assured me that this line will provide very clean power, I am skeptical. I am thinking to get a PS Audio PPP. Any thoughts on this unit? Other recommendations are of course welcome.

Regards,
Paul

Update: Removed 5 bookcases from new listening room. On a previous thread mentioned how old houses have outlets that suck. Upon removing one book case I found outlet that had exposed wiring and nailed to the stud and another outlet glued to the bookcase. Yep you heard me-- glued.

Looks like "uncle Buck" installed the outlets and bookcases.

Thanks Fullnine.

The MC275s anchor the HELICON 300s bass/midrange to sing.

I've heard the larger Dails MegaLine and was very impressed with the wall of sound. In fact the pair I was listening to was being tested out before being shipped to the new owner. Both solid state and tub amps were being tested with the MegaLine.

lapierre

Wow...I bet those Macs and Dalis just sing! I've never heard the Macs but I heard a demo of larger Dalis with Cary monoblocks and it sounded like heaven!

Jim thanks for the comments.

The Dali's are awesome with the MC275s providing plenty of punch for mids/lows and refined details. The soundstage is deep NOT wide with the ribbon tweeter combo. The bass is surprisingly good from a oversized monitor. However, I will be adding a REL 3 subwoofer to extend the lows to 20Hz.

My last house for some reason had very clean power when tested for line noise. Used Richard Grey in Home Theater system 10%. Prefer Synergistic Research for power conditioner if that is your direction. Several of my audiophile friends recommended this brand. However, my preferences for tube power amp or preamp would be power regeneration for continuous operation during listening experiences. PurePower makes several models for power regeneration.

I should be getting my AC lines tested in a couple of weeks to determine power condition solutions.

lapierre

beautifully thought out system dude.........how do you like the Dali's??? also, i'm toying around with the idea of adding a Richard Grey conditioner..........what are your thoughts on any conditioner with tube gear? Thanks!!!

Moved in last MONDAY--dreadful. Nothing fun about moving. At least we finished around 6:00 PM instead of 10:30 PM from the last move.

Choose the smaller room (12 x 11 x 8) for right now because it was easier to work with. The larger room will be used as combination office/overflow room of mixed furniture. That's code for this furniture does not fit in this house.

Six book cases will have to be removed to increase visual space and ensure the walls are accessible. The walls and closet are painted a very dark maroon color. Horrible! Sucks up all the natural light in the room. Looking at Benjamin Moore Aura Paint to solve the problem.

lapierre

Hi Lapierre,

I am glad to hear things are falling into place. We have also just moved into a new home and I too am working to finish my hobby/audio room. See my schematics of my future rooms on my system page. Its dimensions are 4.7 by 3.5 by 2.4 meters, i.e. 15.4 x 11.5 x 7.9 in feet.

Of the two rooms you mention I would definitely choose the large one. Firstly, because it is larger so you have more freedom to move the speakers around, and secondly, because it is not an exact square like the small one (though still close to a square).

Update: Getting close to moving in to the new house. Adding hardwood floor in family room and refinishing hardwood in another room which will add 7 additional days. Looking at two rooms for my audio components:

ROOM ONE
Room size 12 x 12 x 8, hardwood flooring, closet and window. Requires painting, quad electrical receptacle outlets, dedicated lines and removal of bookcases on several walls.

PROS: Smaller room and easier to control room acoustics.

CONS: May have problem adding electrical outlets and dedicated lines. Room is upstairs close to other bedrooms for my late night listening sessions.

ROOM TWO
Room size 14 x 15 x 10, hardwood flooring, big windows, wood panelings and closet. Requires refinishing floors, dedicated lines, quad electrical receptacle outlets and possible lighting updates.

PROS: Good overall space. Tall Ceilings. Room is downstairs and away from main living areas.

CONS: Bookcase and wet bar closet makes the room a bit awkward. Exterior door leading to deck. Two very large windows may make room acoustics hard to work with. Quad electrical receptacle outlets may be hard to install.

Which one would you choose?

Update:

My search for a new home for the office has ended.

Previous post suggested transition to Central Florida which is incorrect. I will be moving to Tallahassee Florida mid September.

The Office is closed.

Currently in transition to Central Florida.

Updates will follow in July or August.

Looking forward to new two channel room and workshop for my woodworking.

Nice clean set up Lapierre.

The Ascendo's look really nice but I have not heard them. The 600's are wonderful speakers and they look really cool. ELAC's have amazing detail but don't pair well with bright amplifiers. They'll sound great with the 275s. I have actually heard that combination. Personally, I have always coveted the Vandersteen Quattro and model 5s.

Appreciate the kind words. I also looked at the 501's but I really wanted tubes! The MC275's sound great with the Dali. I'm really amazed at the sound I can get from such a small speaker. The ribbon tweeter combo help provide the next level of detail similar to the JET tweeter which does it better at 50 Hz.

No I have not listened to the Sapphire editions. Slowly getting the itch to upgrade my speakers. The 600 CE with ribbon tweeter combo has to be considered just as the Ascendo C8.

lapierre

Thanks for the praise. Absolutely love your system. I really wanted the 275s but got a wicked deal on the 501s. How do the Dali's sound paired with the Mac's? I've never heard the combination.

As for the Elac's, I'll have to find out if an upgrade is possible. Have you heard the sapphire editions?

ssayeed

I used to have it on the 4 ohm. It is currently on the 8 ohm. Maybe I will switch again to see. When I was using the 805's, I always had it on the 4 ohm tap

tzh21y

Owner
Good question...

Both MC275 amps run in Mono (Parallel) Hookup Connection which require the 8 ohm tap for my 4 ohm rated Helicon 300. If I was running in Stereo, then I would simply use the 4 ohm tap.

lapierre

Lapierre, do you use the 8 ohm tap or the 4 ohm for your speakers?

tzh21y

I switched out the phillips 12at7s for the Siemens ecc801s. They are very quiet sound very nice. They need at least a couple of days break in

tzh21y

Nice setup. Yes the simplier speakers seem to image better than multi way speakers

vernneal

Yep. Tried it. The sound was pretty average nothing special. Besides that the components were visually crowded on the axis. I did take a lot of time and measurements from the back wall to get the depth perception.
Room treatments would help here but I'm been focusing on component rack and researching power cords.

Thinking back during my audition of tube amps and speakers the rooms were twice the size of my office. Maybe that is why I thought they would work in small rooms.

The C220 is a good preamp and one that I could have easily purchased. Aesthetix Saturn Calypso was also on my list. I would have loved to audition C500 and Aesthetix Jupiter Callisto Eclipse and compare. Unfortunately the Callisto Eclipse was not available when auditioning the C500.

lapierre

Pierre,

Nice System! Mine is a 'little' more modest (but I do have a McIntosh C220 preamp).

I wondered if you tried listening in the 'other axis' in your room (i.e., speakers on 'short' wall, pulled away from surfaces)? Your setup looks similar to the Joachim Gerhard (sp?) recommendations with listener on one (long) wall, speakers widely separated along the opposite side long wall. I am tempted to swing my setup around like that.

I think having the ears within a foot or something of the back wall negates problems with reflections off that surface; the ear doesn't hear it as a separate sound source.

Seems from your comments that you get a lot of depth perception from your system (my Holy Grail!) ...

Guess I just have to try it ... ugh. But it could have benefits.

THanks, - Rick.

Mike system is fine...a bit of refinement and tweaking with PC is what I'm doing and finally designing a component rack. Designing the component rack has become more of a challenge.

lapierre

Hey Pierre! Happy New Year my friend!

How is the system going?

Happy Listening,

Mike
