Embarked on a brief run-through of the Beethoven piano concertos, with a different soloist/orchestra/conductor/venue for each.
Struck by how much more clearly the system as it now stands lets me differentiate not only the different acoustics of the different halls, but also the different recording techniques/philosophies adopted by the sound engineers.

After only a few hours, it's sounding more solid, fuller, more body, and there's also a greater sense of ease to the music.

Added some new components, and have finally got around to adding the corresponding photos.  One more new component pending...

Rogue is the newest component here, which brought about the switch back to Acrolink from Wireworld XCRs.  For their age they sound great.

Next up: currently seeking a better power conditioner.  Stay tuned.

Later: Bryston BCD-3 (or possibly that Mohican...).

Later still: who knows?  Rogue separates, perhaps.  Certainly, eventually, get-off-the-merry-go-round speakers.  The current shortlist (VA Liszt, ProAc D48R, Spendor D9) will surely evolve.

Had the ProAc Response 2.5s for many years; in fact I still have them, moved over to my "secondary" system. When I got them they were paired with Cary SET. The ProAcs are now perhaps 17 years old. I wanted a similar sound signature with a bit more bass, and definitely considered newer ProAcs, but even here on A'gon a used D40 was expensive compared to what I got the 24s for. I auditioned the 24s extensively and really liked what I heard. I wrote about my search in the thread on "forward vs. laid back" speakers that I started a while ago. I also really like the VA Beethoven Baby Grands, but again they are just a little lacking in bass extension. Of the PMCs, I heard 23s and 24s and Fact 6s, but the Facts sounded a bit clinical to me compared to the twenty series, which were a tad warmer and more welcoming (perhaps they're slightly less "accurate" but that doesn't worry me). Combined with the Ayre and the Wireworld cables, I'm getting just the amount of warmth that I was looking for. Fine tuning of the treble can be managed by aiming them straight ahead or toeing in very slightly.

System edited: Multiple changes--pretty much everything save the source components. Close to done for now. Still breaking in, but sounding good.

Many thanks!

The Cary is actually a power amp. I think it's pretty rare. Years ago I found one other person on 'gon that had one. If you search Google Images, the photo from this thread is the only one that shows up!

It's built on a large chassis (that Had used for his 845-based models), unlike the small-chassis 300B Cary monoblocks (and integrated) that a lot more people had. The 301 squeezes out a couple more watts than the monoblocks. This was before Cary went over to the new-fangled 300B's.

System edited: Small but significant change. The Proacs are now another 3" (4' 3" total, measured from front center of speaker) out from the front wall, and hence 2' 3" out from plane of TV screen. While moving them I also took the opportunity of rerouting the speaker cable. Overall a definite improvement.
