Description

Actually its almost V.3 after a recent replacement of all the room windows, many new tweaks, and final touches. After always wanting a dedicated AV room it finally became reality last year. I took the worst room in a big house and turned it into the best. From emptying, cleaning, carpet removal, repairing, painting, & new electrical/phone/cable lines. It needed everything. But it was worth it in the end.

I went back to a projector for video and upgraded to digital & 1080p. For a fairly large room it still filled up quickly with gear. Hard to do double duty for Stereo and HT but this is the best combo I could put together. The room even has a connected bathroom and walk in closet (now turned media storage and beverage depot). Its plenty warm in the winter with all the gear running for an old drafty house. Summer heat is tolerable with a small (& loud) AC unit running. Ruins the high end stereo listening but fine for video. Very happy with my hobbit hole retreat.

Components Toggle details

    • Sim2 HT3000E
1080p DLP. Just replaced a B80. same but brighter.
    • Sony BDP-S5000ES
    Just replaced my BDP-S1.
    • Dalite Cosmopolitian Electrosol
One size larger then I need but got it local and cheap. Eventually would like a tensioned 120
    • B&K Components Reference 70
Really no better then the Ref 50 I had. But helped clean up the wire spaghetti a bit.
    • Pass Labs X-5
Runs the center, rears, and sides with no problems. Still want to upgrade the binding posts on it.
    • Velodyne HGS-15
Still rocks the house, but just had to have the amp repaired by the factory.
    • Vienna Acoustics Oratorio
Still needs a Sound Anchors stand.
    • Vienna Acoustics Mozart
Recently got the Sound Anchor stands and the few inch height add helps a lot.
    • Vienna Acoustics Haydn Signature
They are so nice its almost a shame they are relagated to side surrounds.
    • Transparent PI8
    For the HT units.
    • Pass Labs X-0.2
The heart of the stereo system. Surround pass through to the main speakers.
    • Pass Labs X-350.5
    Nice and heavy.
    • Vienna Acoustics Mahler
Double duty as stereo and surround fronts.
    • Shanling CD-T300
Sounds as good as it looks. With discontinued matching power cord & NOS vintage tubes.
    • Sony Sony DVP-9000es
Use to to double duty for video and Audio now its SACD only.
    • Sony SCD-C555es
For when I want to play a bunch of music without stopping to reload the single units. Argueably the best 5 disk unit produced. I added an IEC power plug myself.
    • Transparent PIR
    For the stereo units.
    • Transparent PIMM
    For the main amp.
    • Transparent Reference (MM)
All stereo cables are Reference MM. RCA, XLR, power, & speaker.
    • Transparent Super MM
Front surround cables are Super MM. XLR, power, & speaker.
    • Transparent Plus MM
Rear/sides surround cables are Plus MM. XLR, power, & speaker.
    • Salamander & Lovan racks
I made custom sides for the Salamander racks. Main rack is a bit too close to the front speaker but could not go anywhere else.
    • Feet etc.. --
The isolators look cooler then they actually help acoustically. But they were cheap and help keep things apart. The vintage Sony isolators and Sound Anchor pucks are great. Eventually all components will all be on cones but until then I have to make do with hockey pucks for some.
    • Acoustic panels --
I am now using most of the acoustic panels I got cheap from a store closing. And without carpet the room needs them.
    • Microsoft XBOX 360 Elite
Gave in last year and got a system after a 15yr break. Most fun per dollar of everything I have. When it breaks I will get a black one. (Notice it is a black now).
    • Power Distribution --
I made some custom budget power cables from Monster Cable Powerline 400. Linked to a modified AC splitter to tie the 3 conditioners to the wall outlet.
    • Isolated 20A Hospital Circuit Hubbel
Dedicated 10 Guage, 20A, Iso-ground circuit, house breaker #1 for all the goods.
    • Final DIY & Tweaks ---
I added braiding to the Transparent Plus speaker cables & any DIY cables for cosmetics and protection. Installed Lutron Spacer remote controlled dimmers for the lights.
