I'm selling much of my audio equipment prior to moving out of state and have a Magnepan CC3 center channel that I'm selling for $475. The CC3 center channel sold new for $1000 and has a 80hz to 20hz frequency response. I purchased Magnepan front left and right speakers with this center channel at Audio Perfection in Minnesota, and it has never had any issues, and only been used in the same pet free, smoke free, climate controlled environment and never moved or stored. I also have 3M window film on all downstairs windows which also cuts close to 100% of ultraviolet light out. The condition is excellent.
It still looks and sounds like new. I have the original box, manual, and spare never used fuse and feet. The color is dark grey with black side trim. I have used this speaker with black .7 and 1.7 floorstanding speakers and the color is dark enough it looked like they were all black. I've included pictures of this speaker with .7s in black to show the difference in color was not an issue.
This center channel will create a very impressive soundstage for both music and movies in a good size room, and in the room it has been used by me it was never pushed anywhere near what it is capable of. This center channel sounds very impressive for both movies and surround music and has a very holographic sound with more depth than anything else I've used. Many people are under the impression that you have to have very expensive amplifiers to drive Magnepans but I've found and can recommend very good bang for the buck amps that work excellent.
The current least expensive Magnepan center channel speaker is the CC5 at $1095 which only goes down to 200hz and is rated a 3 ohm speaker. The reason many people, myself included preferred the CC3 is it is rated 80hz to 20hz and is a 4 ohm speaker. The current CC5 is 200hz to 20hz.
I have read Magnepan's reasoning for the high crossover in the CC5 but having a center channel that goes all the way down to 80hz and is a 4 ohm speaker like the CC3 makes it considerably easier to configure especially so when pairing it with Magnepan MC1s, .7s or 1.7s or any other floorstanding Magnepan speaker and not only makes for easy set it up with a surround sound processor, but results in a very cohesive sound across the front speakers.
I also found by accident a very nice way to mount the center channel. As can be seen in the picture, the CC3 has ¼ inch threads in both the top and bottom of the speaker for screw in feet and by turning the speaker upside down the quasi ribbon tweeter section is then on the bottom and by hanging the speaker with eyelets screwed into the threaded holes the natural weight of the speaker tilts it into the position in the picture. In the room I had it set up you sit 12 'to 13' away from the speaker and this aims the tweeter section directly at your ears. By placing the center channel above the screen it not only works great for movies but allows you to experiment with surround sound for music. I was not a fan of surround sound for music until using this center channel mounted this way.
In my opinion there is no way a center channel speaker mounted considerably lower than the left and right speakers can sound right for surround sound. The center channel mounted this way also works really nice for movie dialog also. In my room I was able to use the THX recommendation for distance using a 110” diagonal screen with this center channel above the screen and have the recommended height of the screen work perfectly for both movie soundtracks and when desired surround sound music. I used this in a room with 9' high ceilings and designed and built the stainless steel tubes to hang the speaker that shows up in the pictures. With 9' high ceilings this placed the speaker at the perfect height for my room using a 110" diagonal screen. I have pictured what I have in both white and stainless steel. They could be shortened to work with 8" ceilings. If buyer is located in the Minneapolis area and wants to pick the item up I will refund the shipping charge of $60 when picked up. Contact me if interested in the hanging system with the speaker or if in the speaker only and I can provide more information.
